Pet Cancer Diagnostics & Treatment

Nothing strikes fear in the heart of a pet owner like a diagnosis of cancer in their dog or cat. Today, however, there are many options for treating pet cancers, from surgical removal to chemotherapy. Your veterinary team at Warm Springs Animal Hospital is skilled and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in dogs and cats.

Treating Pet Cancer

Treating pet cancer is not as challenging as it once was, especially if it is diagnosed early. There are three basic treatment options for cancer in small animals:

cancer treatment

Depending upon the type of cancer and the needs of the patient, a combination of therapies may be used to treat your dog or cat. Our veterinarians work with you to develop a treatment plan that will be effective for your pet.

We perform laboratory diagnostics and imaging, cancer surgery, and chemotherapy at our hospital. If needed, we work with a board-certified oncologist in the area. While we do not perform radiation therapy at our hospital, we are able to refer you to another facility.

Look for the Symptoms

We encourage every pet owner to know the symptoms of cancer in their dogs and cats. The American Veterinary Medical Association offers these 10 warning signs your pet may have cancer:

  • Abnormal swellings
  • Sores that do not heal
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bleeding or discharge from any body opening
  • Offensive odor
  • Difficulty eating or swallowing
  • Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina
  • Persistent lameness or stiffness
  • Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating

These symptoms may not turn out to be a cancer in your pet. However, as they are also indicative of a number of diseases or conditions, they are always a cause for concern. If you see these or any unusual symptoms or behaviors in your pet, contact us immediately to schedule an evaluation.
