Southern Nevada has had its first reported case of Canine Influenza or H3N8 virus. This strain of flu that has been making its way around the U.S. is a highly contagious respiratory infection that was first discovered in 2004, but since has had greater occurances this year.
The symptoms for Canine Influenza are similar to those of Kennel Cough; fever, nasal discharge, lack of energy and a persistent cough. Canine Influenza virus causes an acute respiratory infection in dogs. Since this is a viral disease it is easily spread and highly contagious.
Testing that can be done for Canine Influenza is collecting a muscus swab from the nasal passage or throat and sending it to a Labortory for a validated PCR test for Canine Influenza.
Vaccines are available for Canine Influenza and consists of two injections given at an interval of three weeks, then once a year thereafter.
